New Illegal Dumping Ordinance Approved

(October 17th, 2023)

An increasing volume & variety of solid waste being generated on the reservation with often inadequate methods of managing solid waste are creating hazardous conditions. The conditions include threatening the public health, safety, & well being by contributing to land, air, & water pollution, diminishing our natural resources & aesthetics of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana’s Reservation environment. As a way to combat these issues, Environmental staff worked with tribal council & tribal attorneys in developing the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana’s Solid Waste Ordinance (CTLASWO). The ordinance was formally adopted by tribal council on Sept. 28th, 2023 with resolution NO. 2023-51. This ordinance defines solid waste terminology, outlines tribal jurisdiction relating to solid waste, and established penalties for solid waste related offenses. This ordinance is fully enforceable by the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana’s police department with offenses tried in Tribal court. If you would like to review this ordinance, please reach out to us and we will be able to email you the document. If you wish to report an incident of illegal dumping on the Reservation, please download the form provided and email it to bledoux@coushatta.org.
